The Ring Type Joint (RTJ) refers to the type of gasket used with a specific flange design. RTJ flanges are designed for high-pressure and high-temperature applications, commonly found in the petroleum and petrochemical industries. The sealing surface consists of a high-tolerance groove machined into the flange face with a maximum 63 RMS finish. The seal is created when the bolts are tightened, compressing the RTJ ring into the flange groove.
Ring Type Joint gaskets are manufactured to ASME B16.20 standards and are compatible with flanges made to ANSI B16.5, ASME B16.47 Series A, and API 6A standards.
Technical data sheets on Ring Joint Flanges are available on the Shribhairav Metal Corporation website.
There are three main types of Ring Type Joint gasket designs: R Type, RX Type, and BX Type.
R Type gaskets are the most commonly used and come in two profiles: oval and octagonal. The oval type was the original design, featuring an oval-shaped groove in the flange face. The octagonal RTJ, a modification of the oval design, is now the most common due to its improved sealing efficiency. Both R and RX octagonal gaskets use the same groove design.
RX type gaskets are designed for higher pressures (up to 5000 psi) and are more effective in applications with vibration and shock loading.
BX type gaskets are exclusively used with API 6BX type flanges and are suitable for pressure ratings up to 20,000 psi.
RTJ flanges are typically stamped with the ring number on the outside diameter to indicate the correct ring type to be used.
